AWALK finds his stride on debut album ONE DAY

Artist, producer and classical guitarist AWALK has released his widely anticipated debut album ONE DAY, shortly after the lead runaway single “LIGHT” landed in the new Lexus RX Hybrid commercial.  This reverberated-quixotic offering takes us to somewhere out there in-situ, where time bends, light folds in on itself, and musical ideas saunter through the ether, rain-kissed just before dusk.

The collection of songs set a new bar for the artist’s career. Alex Walker, the man behind the sound gives the listener a thorough demonstration of how the mysterious and often over-looked nylon string guitar can be used in such a modern way.  “These songs are born of the guitar, then everything fashioned around it.” says Walker. With the classical guitar being at the center of each production, he recaptures and displays a 500 year old instrument, placing it on an art-pop stage in 2022.

The lead single ‘LIGHT’ appeared in the Lexus commercial for the RX Hybrid, which was the first chance the public got to hear this new creative palate.  The inviting tone that Walker commands gives the luxury car brand a young, elevated, regal appeal.

The album was recorded over the last year at AWALK’s Sonoran Desert studio in Arizona.  Mixed by Daniel Knowles (Sharon Van Etten), and mastered by John Greenham (Billie Eilish), the sonics on this impressive LP sparkle and rush, leaving your ears dripping in psychedelic light, largely due to the enormous depth of Knowles’ and Greenham’s post production prowess.

AWALK as a producer weaves together a compelling story, tying in all of these seemingly loose ends: classical guitar, mandolin, frenetic drums, post-rock electric guitar skwonk, through-composed melodies, dubby basses, while his voice looks for the brassy spots to cut thru the thicc, roiling brew.  His ideas make sense and reach for the extended, the curious, while being delicately crafted to offer something unique.

It makes sense that Walker also keeps busy composing for other projects, most notably his work for Ritz Carlton, Lexus, and the Dish Network.

Reaching deeper back into his archives reveals he also penned the theme songs for cartoon classics Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward (2006) and Yu Gi Oh GX (2005).

His contribution to the film COAST (2021) allowed for the longer form of film scoring to flourish. Co-composing the score with indie rock legend Grouplove’s Christian Zucconi and Hannah Hooper, the film premiered at Santa Barbara Int’l Film Festival with a theatrical release later in 2022.

This blazingly curious debut album sets it apart from other musical directions seen in today’s pop landscape.  AWALK mixes together the best of what he’s consumed, which happens to be a lot, stylistically, over the years, and gives us a fresh take on where this art-pop torch bearer sees the future,  by writing the soundtrack for it.
